Setting/Location

When/where is it set. Is it filmed on set or on location? Does the setting tell us anything about the genre? The plot? The characters?

Lauries Stairwell in her home,

This location allows for the movie to come full-circle, as at the beginning of the movie, Corey kills the boy he is babysitting by pushing him over the railing of the stairwell. Laurie does the same to Corey at the end of the movie by shooting him, to which he also falls over the railing. This location allows for the character Corey to get the revenge he deserves; by killing him in the same setting he killed the boy.

Props

What props have been included? Do they tell you anything about the setting or genre? Connotations?

Michael Myers Mask, Knife, Gun

These props add to the tone of the movie, which is gore and horror. These props also add to the continuation of the series, Halloween.

Lighting

Natural or artificial Which type? Where is it coming from? Shadows? What atmosphere is created?

Natural, Low-Key Lighting, Lighting is coming from the lightbulbs in the ceiling, as well as the windows. The lighting creates a grim atmosphere.

The lighting varies within this scene, as when they are upstairs, the lighting comes more from the jack-o-lanterns as well as light-bulbs in the room. However, when the scene shifts to downstairs, the light source is the windows.

Costume & Makeup

What are the characters wearing? Does this tell us anything about them, the relationships between them, or the setting?

Laurie is wearing a blue button-down shirt, as well as jeansCorey is wearing his autobody shirt from work, as well as workpants. Corey also has blood dripping out of his mouth and blood on his clothes. He is also wearing Michael Myers’s mask. Allyson was wearing heavy brown jacket.

There is contrast between Laurie and Corey when it comes to costume and makeup. While throughout the movie, we were taught to believe that Laurie was the deranged one, we then come to see at the end of the scene, that corey is more deranged. Laurie, while having a tired face, she has a somewhat put-together outfit that is color-coordinated. Corey, on the other hand, is wearing his same work uniform, as well as has messy hair and blood all over his clothes. His crazed, manic demeanor also compliments his clothing, as it shows how he feels when in possession of Michaels’ mask.

Movement

What does body language and movement tell us about the characters emotions? What kind of atmosphere is created?

Laurie is moving very carefully to not make any sudden movements Through Coreys head movements, we can see that he is going manic. Allyson is panicked, and shows this by her crying and fast movements to comfort Corey.

While Laurie seems bold at the beginning by shooting Corey, we can see when she is walking down the stairs that she is still somewhat afraid and cautious. Through Coreys head movements, we can see that he is going manic. He also illustrates his insanity by his laugh that he gives while on his knees about to be killed. Allyson shows her cluelessness to the situation by showing a surprised look when spotting Laurie with a knife in her hand. She tries to comfort dying Corey by holding his head in her hands, but she is weeping while doing so. This shows her innocence to the situation and her desire to help him even when he has hurt her.

Diegetic Sound

Describe the characters’ voices and sounds made by objects in the scene. What do they add to the meaning of the scene?

Laurie’s voice is very stern throughout her dialogue. Corey does not talk much, however he shows his insanity through a crazed laugh.

Lauries stern voice shows that she is no longer going to allow Corey to feed off of her daughter, and will do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves. Corey, on the other hand, shows the complete opposite. While still trying to gain possession of Allyson, he shows his crazed emotions through his loud out-of-place laugh.

Framing & Composition

What is included in the scene. How are objects/people positioned in the frame and in relation to each other. Are we seeing things from one person’s point of view?

Closed frame, deep focus, arial shot, two-shot, mid-shot, close-up shot, point of view shot.

The scene starts off with a closed frame view of Laurie holding a gun. This shows the boundary unfolding between Laurie and Corey. The scene is also filmed as a point-of-view shot to show Corey hunting for Laurie. After Corey gets shot, we get an ariel view of Corey at the bottom of the stairwell, showing the fall he has taken after being shot. We can see a two-shot when Allyson finds Corey and starts crying. We gain a close-up shot of Allyson weeping, as well as a point of view shot of Coreys face to see from Allyson’s point-of-view. The scene then shows a mid-shot of Laurie holding the knife, allowing us to understand that Allyson thinks that she “caught” Laurie stabbing Corey.
