Discussing Movie Ideas

When my partner, Clare Messer, and I began brainstorming ideas for our film, we both agreed that it would be a great idea to utilize the natural landscape around us as setting space for our film. In beautiful Sarasota Florida, we have many beaches and coastal areas that would be perfect for a unique filming space. However, we both knew that we wanted to approach our film in an intense and engaging genre.

While Clare and I both enjoy the horror genre, we decided to step out of our comfort zone and explore genres that we have never experimented with. We both agreed that the thriller genre would be a great choice for our film, as it is a unique genre that has gateways to many other topics and themes. We want to still do a horror-thriller, as we both came up with a unique concept for our film that creates suspense and fear.

We originally decided on filming a shark attack film, however we felt that this concept was basic and unoriginal. We decided to brainstorm around this concept and find things that we could add. Clare pitched the idea of the bitemark on the 'shark attack' victim being odd, and then thought of the idea of an upside-down cross. I agreed that this would create a great twist in the film. I did research on religious topics to see what we could add to our film in order to create a theme. I found the bible verse Luke 16:28, which reads, "for I have five brothers-- in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment". I chose this bible verse, as it would be the perfect line to introduce a horror aspect to our film, as our characters are experiencing "torment" from an unknown being. The book of Luke's overall message is "the perfect man", learning to follow god and rid yourself of sin. This would be a perfect basis for the message of our film, which is God and sin. We came up with the idea to have five characters in our film, as the number five has many different religious meanings.

While the bible verse we chose involves "five brothers" there are other ideas that I thought would be good to implement in our film which correlate to the number five. There are a total of five books in the old testament; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. We have ultimately decided to base our characters off of the names of these books. We will implement the first letter of each of these books into our characters names, giving  subtle hint to the message behind the characters.
