Week 6 (2/3): Starting to Film

February 28th: Group Shot filming

We began our filming process at the beach access on Lido Key. Our entire cast list, as well as my partner and I were in attendance. We began our process by getting film done of our group shots first, as our film mostly consists of group shots. We wanted to make sure we prioritized these shots first, that way we would only need our full cast line-up for a smaller amount of days.

I began by setting up our light fixtures and making sure that the framing of our camera encompassed all four characters. I used a tripod to prop up the phone, in order to ensure stable shots. For this film day, my role was camera-man, as well as an actress playing the role of Lexi.

It was challenging for me to handle two positions in the filming process, as it was hard to calculate when I should enter the frame during the group shots. However, it was fun to learn how to set up film equipment and practice my film work. I also thoroughly enjoyed working with the cast and listening to their ideas and feedback on the characters they played.

It took us about two hours to finish filming our shots, mostly due to the location we were in, as we had difficulties with the sand and waves interrupting our shots and dialogue. However, we quickly overcame this setback, as I taught my team and cast members how to tuck their clip-on microphones in their shirts to block the wind and still pick up dialogue.

It was easy for me to handle lighting, as we only needed one light fixture in order to brighten our shots. We still wanted most of our shots to be on the dimmer side, as we are filming just after sunset.

I was happy with the results, as I feel as if I went out of my comfort zone by filming in a more risky environment, and learned how to overcome obstacles during the production process.

There were a few things we had to change, such as removing some shots and lines from our script and storyboard. We had to eliminate some dialogue due to the time constraints we have for our film opening. However, I still believe that my team mate and I did a great job executing our vision.
